— The Interview
The Story of Mr. Jack
A conversation about craft, purpose, and the ticking heart of every timepiece.
What is your real name?
My real name is Phakphuwin, and my nickname is Kwang. However, since it was quite difficult for my foreign customers to pronounce, I started using the name "Jack" so it would be easier to remember.
What were you like as a child?
I was just like any ordinary kid. But back then, most of my free time was spent doing chores and helping my parents out around the house.
What did your family do for a living?
My father was a watch repairer. He ran his own watch repair shop.
What is your very first memory of watches?
To be honest, I never wanted to be a watch repairer. Back then, I felt like it was a profession that lacked freedom.
Did you have a first-ever watch?
Yes, I did. It was a Seiko Automatic.
What eventually sparked your interest in watches?
It came from a period in my life when I was living without a clear purpose. One day, I realized that if I didn't master a specific trade or skill, I wouldn't know which direction my life would go. So, I decided to get serious about watchmaking, building upon the foundational skills I picked up from being my father's apprentice.
